So, After knocking his maiden century in his debut ODI and being the first Indian to do it, K.L. Rahul has managed to gain the attention of the selectors and it’s high time now for Karnataka to celebrate the permanent position of Rahul in the national squad.
Feels good, right?! It’s one hell of a moment to be proud of.
Karnataka has always been producing classy players, be it Gundappa Vishwanath, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, B.S. Chandrashekar, Roger Binny, Javgal Srinath and the list of this elite club is growing (Yes!! Another point to prove that you are a proud Kannadiga). But, would you believe it, none of the Karnataka players represented the national side in 2011 and 2015 world cup (Yeah, Stuart Binny was just on the paper). Despite lifting the Ranji trophy in 2014 and 2015, however it took some more time to prove their worth and adeptness on the ground. Although Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun and Robin Uthappa were regular visitors to the Indian squad, none of them really grabbed the opportunity to make an impact. But on a positive note 3 players from Karnataka, Manish Pandey, Karun Nair and Rahul have succeeded in finding themselves a place in the team.
K.L. Rahul, who is a lot similar to Ajinkya Rahane, not only in looks but also with the old school batting style has already managed to get the tag ‘HeartThrobber’ with his fancy hairstyle. He happens to be the only player along with Karun, to score a triple century for the state. Rahul, who is a native of the city Mangaluru is the son of a retired HOD/civil in NITK, Surathkal, K.N. Lokesh. Having stayed in the campus of NITK, Surathkal, for maximum parts of his childhood, he decided to opt cricket as his mainstream career instead of engineering (Good job, right?!).
After his prominent performance as an opener and wicket keeper in the domestic circuit, Rahul got his call for the national side, which was touring Australia in the summer. He got his test cap in the 3rd match at Melbourne wherein he could just manage a 3 and 6. But it was in the 4th match at Sydney, where he scored a brilliant century in the first innings and managed an eye catching partnership with Virat Kohli. Later he went on to score his 2nd hundred against Sri Lanka at Colombo.
It was obvious there would be more surprises in his way considering his previous mind blowing batting, and true to the word he was picked by the team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (acroynmed RCB) for the IPL-2016. Although he started playing IPL with the tag of ‘test cricketer’, he managed to get out of it by playing handy knocks under pressure with good strike rate. He went on to score 4 half centuries and ended up as the 3rd most run getter for RCB only after Virat and A.B.DeVilliers. Because of his excellent performance in IPL, he managed to get a place in the ODI squad currently playing in Zimbabwe and has been the best performer by winning the ‘Man of the series’ in ODI.
He attracts every cricket fan with his artistic cover drives. No dubiousness about his technique and temperament, but, he has also shown the adaptability to all the formats of the game in different conditions.
Let’s just say, we have a great cricket player in the making, who will go on to make histories on the field with his resplendent batting.
So, now you know whom to look out for!!
